What it’s like in the country’s most exclusive resort community

The perfect combination of gracious living, relaxed luxury, and pristine nature, Sea Island is an exclusive private resort community located just off the coast of Georgia in the Golden Isles. The serene coastal setting and extensive array of amenities and activities makes Sea Island an extraordinary vacation retreat or place to live.

The weather is wonderfully mild all year, allowing you to take full advantage of a wealth of recreational pursuits including golf, horseback riding, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, tennis, and lounging on the beach. Average winter temperatures see highs in the mid-60s and lows in the 40s; summer temperatures range from the low-to-mid-70s to the upper 80s or low 90s, with a lovely coastal breeze.
  • Secluded Feel,
    Convenient Location

A key advantage to Sea Island is the convenient location, just under an hour’s flight from Atlanta or about an hour’s drive from Jacksonville, which has multiple direct flights to and from major cities like New York (2 ½ hours).

Another is that access to Sea Island—via a bridge from St. Simons Island—is limited to residents, resort guests, and club members. This further enhances privacy and quiet.

Even better, the exclusive Ocean Forest enclave in which 492 Forest Road is located is restricted to 100 homes. You pass over two bridges and through two gates to reach this secluded sanctuary—and the lot next door is currently for sale if you want additional privacy.

The peaceful feel of Sea Island is also protected; privately owned by a family, it is part of a hundred-year trust. Much of the island is untouched nature; there are only about 600 residences, and development is controlled.

  • Laidback Luxury &
    Exceptional Amenities

This opulent oasis has been known for outstanding hospitality since 1928, when the famous Cloister Resort opened. The only U.S. resort to host a G-8 Summit of world leaders, it welcomes dignitaries, families, couples, and business travelers with impeccable service and an abundance of leisure activities. The Cloister holds a coveted Forbes Five-Star designation.

In fact, Sea Island offers an amazing four Forbes Five-Star experiences. In addition to The Cloister, these include The Lodge, The Spa at Sea Island, and the Georgian Rooms restaurant. The culinary scene here is superior, with excellent cuisine at a range of options from fine dining to casual.

Across the way from The Cloister, you’ll find the Beach Club, set along a five-mile stretch of private shoreline. The home is just 5 minutes from The Cloister and the Beach Club.

More exceptional amenities include multiple championship golf courses, the Yacht Club, and the Broadfield Sporting Club and Lodge. There are even unique experiences like falconry, sea turtle discovery walks, and dolphin tours.

These are all part of the Sea Island Club; ownership of 492 Forest Road gives you application rights for club membership.

Let’s look at each of these in detail.

  • A Golfers’ Paradise

Sea Island is a haven for golfers, with many PGA TOUR pros living here to take advantage of the extraordinary variety of courses and balmy weather. It offers three incredible private championship courses as well as the world-renowned Golf Performance Center.

The most legendary course is the historic Scottish links-style Seaside Course. Built in 1929 by Colt and Allison and redesigned by Tom Fazio, it is one of the top 100 courses in the U.S.

Another historic option is the Plantation Course, originally built in 1928. Mark and Davis Love III grew up playing here and then redesigned it in 2019. Together with the Seaside Course, it hosts the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic every year.

The third is the challenging yet approachable Retreat Course, also redesigned by Mark and Davis Love.

The Cloister at Sea Island
  • This stunning and celebrated resort was designed by well-known architect Addison Mizner in 1928 and completely renovated in 2006 to enhance the original grandeur of its Spanish Mediterranean style.

Amenities include beautifully designed public and private spaces; fabulous salt marsh and river views and access; a large swimming pool overlooking the water; a fishing pier and boat dock; tennis, squash, and pickleball courts; a library; a solarium with lovebirds and a soothing water feature; shops; a charming stone chapel; a salon; and a fitness center with personal trainers and more than 200 group classes a month.

Winding paths lead around the lush 50-acre estate, perfect for leisurely walks and bike rides past ancient oaks and magnificent magnolias.

  • Named one of the top U.S. hotel spas by Travel + Leisure magazine, the 65,000-square-foot Spa at Sea Island delivers a vast menu of lavish services in a Forbes Five-Star experience. Designed to harness the healing power of water, it offers a hydrotherapy pool, water rotunda, mineral pool bath, whirlpool, water reflexology path, and spa therapy showers. Additional restorative treats include a relaxation garden atrium, sunbathing terraces, a eucalyptus steam room, a cedar dry sauna, a meditation labyrinth, relaxation lounges, and couples’ suites.

The Coastal Experience Center provides access to the water and surrounding nature through activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, dolphin and sunset cruises, and more.

You can also book fishing charters and go horseback riding, in addition to one-of-a-kind adventures like exploring the marsh with a professional falconer and experiencing the thrill of a Harris hawk flying to your gloved hand.

  • The Cloister contains four distinctive restaurants. The Forbes Five-Star Georgian Rooms offers an upscale yet relaxed atmosphere, a cozy lounge serving superb sushi, and a stylish dining room featuring classic steaks and fresh local seafood as well as an extensive wine and cocktail menu.

Tavola serves delicious rustic Italian dishes and authentic pizza from a Mugnaini wood oven in a welcoming space that includes an enclosed veranda and garden courtyard.

The clubby River Bar & Lounge has cypress beams, wood paneling, and plush leather seating; a creative yet familiar menu combines French and Southern flavors. The bar is open late for classic cocktails; vintage port, cognac, or whiskey; and snacks like truffle fries or French beignets.

The Sea Island Beach Club
  • Just across Sea Island Road from The Cloister lies the Sea Island Beach Club. Nestled in sand dunes and completely renovated in 2002, it offers everything you could want for a relaxing day in the sun. A wide expanse of soft sand stretches for five miles along the Atlantic Ocean, and lounge chairs and umbrellas are available.

  • There are five swimming pools including a zero-entry pool and an adults-only pool, with a bar nearby. The Beach Club building features a breezy open-air lobby, shaded lounging areas, shops, changing rooms, and plenty of space for private events such as parties and weddings. It also holds a bowling alley and an open-air bar.

Dining options include poolside service as well as the al fresco oceanfront Southern Tide, serving fresh seafood; the Snack Shack, offering popular favorites including burgers, sandwiches, salads, and the famous fried chicken sandwich; Sea Strike gastropub at the bowling alley; and Wonderland ice cream and candy shop. There’s also a refreshment stand at the beach.

  • Watersports include Hobie Cat sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking.

The Sea Island Surf Camp and Sea Island Nature Center are located here as well for additional activities such as surfing, sea turtle patrols, coastal bike rides, and birding tours with a resident naturalist.

  • Rainbow Island

This secluded and unspoiled spot is home to all sorts of outdoor recreational pursuits including horseback riding; falconry and hawk walks with a professional falconer; and salt marsh tours with a naturalist via kayak or stand-up paddleboard.

  • The Lodge

Another Forbes Five-Star resort, The Lodge is a stately and secluded boutique hotel with intimate rooms and suites plus seven private cottages.

Located close to the Sea Island Club’s championship golf courses, The Lodge also has an 18-hole putting course designed by Davis and Mark Love as well as a lovely swimming pool that overlooks the ocean.

There are three restaurants onsite: the classic and elegant steakhouse, Colt & Alison; the inviting Oak Room, which serves Southern favorites; and the casual Halfway House, which offers tasty bites and refreshing drinks by the pool (and 9th hole of the golf course).

  • Broadfield Sporting
    Club & Lodge

Set on 5,800 private and serene acres, Broadfield is a rustic yet refined sporting club and lodge with fishing, shooting, quail and pheasant hunting, and falconry. The grounds include a hunting lodge, guesthouse, guest cabin, pool with pool house, and a lake full of large-mouth bass. A full-time chef prepares farm-to-table dishes with locally sourced ingredients.

In addition to all the amenities and activities available through the Sea Island Club, you’ll also appreciate all that the neighboring community of St. Simons Island has to offer.

St. Simons Island

Connected by a 4.2-mile causeway to the mainland, St. Simons Island is a magical mix of salt marshes, residential neighborhoods tucked amidst oaks and magnolias, unspoiled beaches, historic sites, hotels, shops, and tons of top-notch restaurants.

  • Everything you need for daily life can be found here, including grocery stores, banks, and a post office. There’s also a medical center on the island as well as St. Simons Airport at McKinnon Field, which has general aviation services and two runways for private aircraft. Car rentals are available here as well.

A dozen parks and preserves are dotted around St. Simons, providing scenic spots to explore and enjoy the abundance of natural beauty through walking trails, kayak launches, and more.

  • There are marinas as well, including the Hampton River Marina, which is home to the water taxi that ferries passengers to the private resort of Little St. Simons Island.

The island is also home to six golf courses, including the three at the private Sea Island Golf Club (which Sea Island Club members have access to): the Seaside Course, the Plantation Course, and the Retreat Course. Additional courses are the private Frederica Golf Club, the Sea Palms Golf Course, and the King and Prince Golf Course.

  • The historic waterfront Pier Village is located on the southern tip of St. Simons and holds a wide variety of local shops and restaurants as well as the fishing pier. Just to the east lie several beaches including East Beach and Gould’s Inlet. Other shopping areas include Retreat Plaza, Market Street, Redfern Village, and the Shops at Sea Island.
